Practicing Salary Negotiations

On average in the United States, women earn 82-85% of what men earn (January 2022). Most people take the first offer of their job, but learning to lookout for yourself is important! Before going into an interview, know what the average salary for your position is and have the confidence to know what your work is worth. Negotiations are part of the hiring process, start practicing now to set your future self up for success! I have included my example below.

Hello Jane,

I have loved working on the marketing team the last two years and helping with the redesign of the company. As I have worked with the team on this project and done research on my own time to better contribute, I feel my skills have greatly increased and was hoping we could discuss a higher salary for this upcoming year?

With the current industry standards, the recent projects I have completed within the last few months, and the special teams I have been assigned to because of my unique skill set, I feel that an 8% raise would coincide with industry standards and be a reflection of the skills I bring to the team.

I am open to a constructive meeting where we can have a more detailed conversation to find a beneficial solution for both of us. Would we be able to make this work?
